The story should begin with Houyi shooting down the suns. Long long time ago, Houyi and Changer were known as a happy couple in heaven and were deeply in love with each other. After Houyi shooting down the suns, the Jade Emperor got so furious that he ordered Houyi, together with Changer, to stay at the earth forever and never return to the heaven. Since then, they suffered from illness and death as ordinary human beings.

As times went by, Changer was terrified to see wrinkles around her face and so she asked Houyi to find some way to stop being aging. Houyi heard that there lived a Goddess on the top of Kunlun Mountain, who had a pill of immortality, so he went and begged for it. Fortunately，the Goddess gave him one pill and told Hou Yi that if one person took the pill he would ascend to Heaven, but if he cut the pill into two halves and shared it with another person, they could only live forever. Also, the pill had to be taken on the 15th night of the eighth month when the moon was fullest. Hou Yi went home to Chang Er. And they decided to divide the pill and take it at the proper time.
